New Delhi: India reported 83,527 new Covid cases in the past 24 hours taking its coronavirus tally past the 56-lakh mark, shows the Health Ministry's COVID-19 data; the country reported 1,085 deaths in this period. With 89,746 people having beaten COVID-19 in the last 24 hours, the number of total recoveries remained more than the number of new infections for the fifth consecutive day, the data shows. The total coronavirus recoveries now stands at 45,87,613. The overall recovery rate in the country has crossed 81 per cent.

Here are the top 10 updates on coronavirus:

  1. India has, so far, recorded 56,46,010 COVID-19 cases, the Health Ministry data shows. A total of 90,020 people have lost their lives to COVID-19 till now. The country's fatality rate stands at 1.59 per cent.

  2. The country now has 9.68 lakh active cases of coronavirus; these account for less than 17 per cent of all cases. Positivity rate in the country stands at 8.02 per cent.

  3. India's testing capacity has been increased to more than 12 lakh tests a day. Till now, more than 6.5 crore tests have been conducted across the country, the Health Ministry tweeted this morning.

  4. India has been recording the highest number of new cases in the world since August. In September alone, India recorded an average of 90,000 cases per day until recently.

  5. Global coronavirus infections have soared past 3.1 crore. India is the country with the second-highest coronavirus caseload, accounting for 19 per cent of all cases in the world.

  6. With stubble burning likely to start in some agricultural states of north India Sanjeev Nagpal, an advisor to the Union and the Punjab governments on the crop residue management has said it could exacerbate the Coronavirus crisis. "Carbon Monoxide and Methane could give rise to severe respiratory problems, which will further worsen the COVID-19 situation," he said.

  7. National Capital Delhi, often at the heart of India's air pollution debate, is the sixth worst-hit city-state with almost 4,000 new Covid cases and 2.53 overall cases.

  8. States of Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh, both of which have been reporting a sharp percentage rise in Covid cases, have imposed restrictions on people's movement across districts till the end of this month.

  9. While schools across the country are allowed to partially reopen for students of Class 9 to 12 from today, only a few states have decided to go ahead with the partial reopening, including Andhra Pradesh - the second hardest-hit state in the country.

  10. Maharashtra remains the state hit hardest by the pandemic, with over 12.42 lakh COVID -19 cases, including 33,015 deaths, followed by Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh.
