Guwahati: A high-level team comprising central and state government representatives, led by Adviser to Union Finance Ministry Dina Nath, visited Assam for two days for an on-the-ground inspection to assess the extent of damage caused by floods in Assam.

The team visited parts of Lower Assam and Majuli, and gathered first-hand information after visiting several flood-hit areas, a state government statement said today.

The team also inspected the embankments in Majuli and the damage the recent floods have caused to the embankments.

The team was deputed following the Assam government request to the Centre for assistance to combat damages caused by the floods.

Union Minister of State for Water Resources, River Development & Ganga Rejuvenation Sanjeev Kumar Balyan visited the state on September 14 and assured the state to send an inter-ministerial team to Assam to assess the damage caused by floods and erosion.

During his visit, the minister also announced a Rs 260-crore package for Majuli, the river island in the Brahmaputra.
