CBSE Board Paper Leak: Police sources said papers may have been leaked the evening before the two exams

New Delhi: Delhi police has set up a special team for investigating the leak of two CBSE question papers. The Central Board of Secondary Education scrapped both; Class 12 economics exam and Class 10 mathematics exam, after the reports that students had been able to access the handwritten question papers. The probe which started last evening has so far questioned 25 people, mostly students. The police are working to trace the source of the CBSE leaked papers that appear to have been circulated over WhatsApp, the encrypted messenger service.

Police detained a Delhi-based coaching centre owner and a businessman for interrogation in the CBSE question paper leak case. "The CBSE officials received a complaint via fax from an unknown person on March 23 that Vicky (coaching centre owner) is involved in the leak of question papers," said a police officer. "Police are suspecting a strong syndicate involved in the question paper leak. We will also question CBSE officers who could be involved," the officer said.

"We were shocked after hearing the news of the re-examination. Why should we suffer just because a handful of students got the leaked paper before the examination," one class 10 student said.Many of the students claimed that almost all the papers were leaked a day before the examinations, and demanded that if a re-examination is to be held, it should be held of all the subjects.

The investigating officer further said, "CBSE had found out about the paper leak by mail. We are trying to find out more about who had sent the mail. The moment the board found out that the paper was leaked they took steps. They are being very cooperative."

We have questioned a total of 25 people out of which 18 are students, some of them in college, and five of whom are tutors. We have not made any arrests, says RP Upadhyaya, Delhi Police officer in-charge of the investigation.

  • Union Education Minister Prakash Javadekar told reporters that "2-3 papers" had leaked but promised parents and students that the authorities had filed a police complaint right away.
  • The minister underlined that the leaks appeared to be a localised problem limited just to Delhi.
