Reacting to his party's loss in the Budgam bypolls, J&K Chief Minister and National Conference's Vice President Omar Abdullah said he feels "less pained" about his situation after the Bihar results. 

"When the Voter Adhikar Yatra happened, huge crowds turned up. Congress felt that they would be successful in many seats, and the seat-sharing became difficult, but when we see the result, Nitish Kumar converted anti-incumbency to incumbency. He is going to be the CM for the 10th time; it is not a normal thing," he said.

With BJP's Devyani Rana winning the assembly bypoll from the Nagrota constituency, Jammu and Kashmir will now have four elected women legislators for the first time.

The Jammu and Kashmir assembly had elected three women MLAs in 2008, 2014, and 2024, marking the highest female representation until now at 4.44 per cent.

The other elected women members of the current assembly are National Conference (NC) leader Sakina Masood Ittoo, who is also a Cabinet minister in the Omar Abdullah government; Shamima Firdous (NC); and Shagun Parihar (BJP).

Reacting to his party's loss in Budgam bypolls, J&K Chief Minister and National Conference's Vice President Omar Abdullah said that they will analyse what went wrong and if some change is required in the party. 

"We wanted something else. We wanted development in Budgam, but people wanted otherwise. Now we will analyse the result, where we erred, where we need to fix, if some change is required in NC. We will have working committee meeting, take decisions," he said.

Reacting to his win, PDP candidate Muntazir Mehdi said the bypoll verdict is a protest against the ruling National Conference (NC) for not keeping its promises.

"This verdict is a protest against the NC for not fulfilling its political and developmental promises. This verdict will force the NC to fulfill the promises it made to the people of J-K," Muntazir said.

"This (win) is a result of the hard work of 50 years, and now Budgam's vote will get a true representation," he said, adding that the people of Budgam have voted for a change and accountability.

Following the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) win in the Budgam Assembly bypolls, PDP leader and Pulwama MLA Waheed Para said that the win serves as "a message to Omar Abdullah's government." 

He said, "This is a message to Omar Abdullah's government that despite having 50 MLAs, the administration is missing on the ground."

National Conference (NC) tasted its first-ever electoral defeat in the Budgam assembly segment of Jammu and Kashmir as the opposition PDP's Aga Syed Muntazir wrested the seat from the ruling party in the bypolls. Muntazir's victory in the polls takes the PDP's tally in the J-K legislative assembly to four.

This is the first time that the NC has lost in its bastion of Budgam, in central Kashmir, since 1957, the first elections for the legislative assembly.

The NC has won every assembly election in Budgam whenever it has fielded a candidate from the Shia-dominated segment. The only time the seat was not represented by the NC was in 1972 when the party had boycotted the polls across J-K.

Following the Congress party's defeats in both the Budgam and Nagrota Assembly bypolls in Jammu and Kashmir, All India Congress Committee (AICC) General Secretary, Ghulam Ahmad Mir explained the Nagrota loss as an expected outcome, citing the BJP's prior 2024 victory and public "sympathy for Devender Rana's daughter" following his demise as key factors. 

Regarding the Budgam loss to the PDP, Mir attributed the result to public dissatisfaction, stating that while "people didn't have a lot of love for the PDP," their vote was a rejection due to people being "angered" after "one year of the National Conference."

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh celebrated the AAP's victory in the Tarn Taran Assembly bypolls, emphasising that it reflects the people's preference for effective governance.

He credited party leader Arvind Kejriwal for the win and assured that all commitments made to the residents of Tarn Taran will be prioritised.

Harmeet Singh Sandhu won by a margin of 12,091 votes in the Tarn Taran bypolls.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) secured a significant victory in the high-stakes Budgam Assembly by-election in Jammu and Kashmir. PDP candidate Muntazir Mehdi emerged victorious, securing a total of 21,576 votes and defeating his nearest rival by a margin of 4,478 votes. The close contest saw Mehdi defeat Mahmood Al-Mosavi of the ruling Jammu & Kashmir National Conference and independent candidate Jibran Dar. 

Meanwhile, the BJP's candidate, Mohsin Mosvi, finished well down the list, garnering only 2,619 votes and securing sixth place.

The victory of Congress candidate Pramod Jain "Bhaya" in the Anta Assembly by-election in Rajasthan has drawn a sharp reaction from the state's party leadership. Rajasthan Congress leader Govind Singh Dotasra praised the win as a clear mandate from the public against the opposition's alleged tactics of "misusing money and power" and attempts to "tarnish" the Congress candidate's image.

BJP's Devyani Rana won in Jammu and Kashmir's Nagrota by defeating Jammu & Kashmir National Panthers Party's Harsh Dev Singh and Jammu & Kashmir National Conference's Shamin Begum by a margin of 42,350 votes.

In Mizoram's Dampa, Mizo National Front's Dr R Lalthangliana defeated Zoram People's Movement's Vanlalsailova by a margin of 562 votes. Other defeated candidates include BJP's Lalhmingthanga and Congress's John Rotluangliana.

AAP's Harmeet Singh Sandhu defeated Shiromani Akali Dal's Sukhwinder Kaur by 12,091 votes. Independent candidate Mandeep Singh Khalsa, Congress's Karanbir Singh and BJP's Harjit Singh Sandhu also lost in Punjab's Tarn Taran Assembly bypolls.

In Rajasthan's Anta, Pramod Jain of Congress emerged victorious by 15,612 margin. BJP's Morpal Suman had lost in the elections.

Naveen Yadav of Congress won in Telangana's Jubilee Hills assembly bypolls by 24,729. He defeated Bharat Rashtra Samithi's Maganti Sunitha Gopinath and BJP's Deepak Reddy Lankala.

Meanwhile, Peoples Democratic Party's Muntazir Mehdi, Jharkhand Mukti Morcha's Somesh Chandra Soren and BJP's Jay Dholakia are leading in J&K's Budgam, Jharkhand's Ghatsila and Odisha's Nuapada respectively.

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) National Convener Arvind Kejriwal congratulated the party on the victory in Tarn Taran bye-elections, saying people of Punjab prefer "politics of work."

In an X post, Arvind Kejriwal lauded Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann's leadership, while extending wishes to the public and party workers.

The ruling AAP's candidate Harmeet Singh Sandhu won by a margin of 12,091 votes in the Tarn Taran bypolls. Sandhu is a Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) turncoat and a three-time MLA.

In a significant electoral victory for the Congress party, Naveen Yadav has won the Jubilee Hills Assembly Bypoll in Telangana. Yadav secured a decisive margin of 24,729 votes, defeating his main rival, Maganti Sunitha Gopinath of the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), and the BJP candidate, Deepak Reddy Lankala. 

Yadav secured 98,988 votes while Gopinath and Lankala secured 74,259 and 17,061 votes respectively.

Harmeet Singh Sandhu, the winning Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) candidate in Punjab's Tarn Taran assembly by-polls, is an experienced local politician. Sandhu is a three-time former MLA from the constituency, having first been elected as an Independent in 2002, and subsequently winning for the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) in 2007 and 2012. 

Despite losing the seat in the 2017 and 2022 general elections, he joined the AAP in July and successfully secured the bypoll victory, defeating the SAD's Sukhwinder Kaur and independent candidate Mandeep Singh Khalsa.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has successfully retained the Tarn Taran Assembly seat, with its candidate Harmeet Singh Sandhu securing a victory in the by-elections. Sandhu won by a margin of 12,091 votes.

Sandhu garnered a total of 42,649 votes to defeat his nearest competitor, Sukhwinder Kaur of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), who received 30,558 votes. Independent candidate Mandeep Singh Khalsa finished third with 19,620 votes.

Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) president B Mahesh Kumar Goud on Friday said the imminent victory of the party candidate in the Jubilee Hills Assembly bypoll is an endorsement of the Revanth Reddy government's performance.

Speaking to reporters at Nizamabad, he said the voters have rejected the K Chandrasekhar Rao-led BRS.

The success of Congress in the bypolls to Secunderabad Cantonment seat last year and Jubilee Hills now shows that the people are satisfied with CM Reddy's leadership and the government's welfare programmes, he said.

"When BRS won zero seats in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, it was clear that it did not have any future in the state. BRS has failed to retain its seat now. The verdict of the people of Jubilee Hills is that BRS has no place in the state," Goud said.

Congress's Pramod Jain secured a victory in the Anta Assembly constituency in Rajasthan. Jain won by a comfortable margin of 15,612 votes, defeating the BJP's Morpal Suman and Independent candidate Naresh Meena. 

Pramod Jain secured a total of 69,571 votes in the contest. The BJP's Morpal Suman finished second with 53,959 votes, closely followed by the Independent candidate Naresh Meena, who garnered 53,800 votes.

As Congress candidate Naveen Yadav takes the lead in the counting for the Jubilee Hills assembly by-polls, Telangana Minister Ponnam Prabhakar launched a sharp attack, alleging a hidden political alliance between the BJP and the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS). Prabhakar claimed that the two parties maintain a close "friendship" at both the central and state levels. 

He said, "There is friendship between BJP and BRS both in center and state...BRS helped BJP in Parliament so BJP now gave them the Jubilee hills bypolls seat as a part of 'Gurudakshana'."

Newly-elected BJP MLA Devyani Rana has expressed gratitude to the voters of Nagrota for electing her. Following her decisive victory, Rana highlighted the BJP's winning approach, saying, "When BJP contests elections, it does so to win." 

"I am fortunate that the manner in which Nagrota blessed Rana sahib (her father, late MLA Devender Singh Rana), they did their duty of being a family today too and blessed me. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Devyani Rana has secured a decisive victory in the Nagrota assembly constituency, winning by a significant margin of 24,647 votes.

Rana emerged as the clear winner, receiving 42,350 votes. She defeated the closest challenger, Harsh Dev Singh of the Jammu & Kashmir National Panthers Party (JKNPP), who received 17,703 votes. Shamim Begum of the Jammu & Kashmir National Conference (JKNC) finished third, polling 10,872 votes.

The Congress, which is staring at a rout in Bihar, may get a consolation prize down south: its candidate is leading in the bypoll at Telangana's Jubilee Hills constituency. At 12:00 pm, the Congress candidate Naveen Yadav is leading by over 12,000 votes. 

On Number 2 is Bharat Rashtra Samithi's Maganti Sunitha Gopinath, and BJP's Deepak Reddy Lankala is now in the third position. Jubilee Hills is one of 15 constituencies in Hyderabad.  

An economics graduate from the University of California, Devyani Rana is the daughter of BJP MLA Devender Rana whose death necessitated the by-election in Nagrota. She is businesswoman who has been managing her family's enterprises. Her campaign focused on a platform of "professional and inclusive development." 

Mizoram's main opposition party, Mizo National Front (MNF), retained the Dampa assembly seat in Mamit district, with its candidate R Lalthangliana defeating his nearest rival, Vanlalsailova of the ruling Zoram People's Movement (ZPM), by a margin of 562 votes.

Lalthangliana secured 6,981 votes, which is 40.23 per cent of the total vote share. With 6,419 votes, Vanlalsailova bagged 36.61% of the total polled votes.

Congress nominee John Rotluangalian stood third, securing 2,394 votes, while BJP candidate Lalhmingthanga clinched fourth place, securing 1,541 votes. People's Conference Party candidate K Zahmingthanga secured 50 votes.

As the counting for Assembly by-elections progresses across eight constituencies, the latest trends at 11:00 AM indicate a split decision, with the BJP and Congress securing leads in key states.

The BJP is ahead in two crucial seats: Devyani Rana leads in Nagrota, J&K, and Jay Dholakia maintains a strong position in Nuapada, Odisha.

The Congress has established command in two pivotal contests: Naveen Yadav is ahead in Telangana's Jubilee Hills, and Pramod Jain has firmly reclaimed the lead in Rajasthan's Anta.

Meanwhile, regional dominance is evident in other states: the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha's Somesh Chandra Soren is leading in Ghatsila, Jharkhand, the Peoples Democratic Party's Muntazir Mehdi is ahead in Budgam, J&K, the Mizo National Front's Dr R Lalthangliana holds the advantage in Dampa, Mizoram, and the AAP's Harmeet Singh Sandhu has taken the lead in Tarn Taran, Punjab.

The contest for Rajasthan's Anta Assembly seat has seen another shift in momentum, with the Congress party's Pramod Jain once again establishing lead. Jain is now ahead by a margin of 1,929 votes, overturning the brief advantage held by the independent candidate.

This significant gain pushes Independent candidate Naresh Meena, who had earlier surged to the top, and the BJP candidate Morpal Suman, into trailing positions. 

The counting for J&K's  Budgam Assembly by-election has seen a shift in momentum, with Aga Syed Muntazir Mehdi of the Jammu & Kashmir Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) moving into the lead. He is currently ahead by a narrow margin of 32 votes.

This development places the earlier frontrunner, Aga Syed Mahmood Al-Mosavi of the Jammu & Kashmir National Conference (NC), and the independent candidate Nazir Ahmad Khan, into trailing positions.

Independent candidate Naresh Meena has achieved a significant turnaround in the ongoing counting for Rajasthan's Anta Assembly by-election, moving into the lead with a margin of 152 votes. This shift places Congress's Pramod Jain and BJP's Morpal Suman behind in the count. Initial trends had favoured the Congress candidate, Pramod Jain.

The counting of votes for the Tarn Taran assembly bypoll is witnessing a close contest, with the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) candidate, Harmeet Singh Sandhu, gaining a narrow lead. Sandhu is currently ahead by 179 votes, overturning an earlier lead held by Shiromani Akali Dal's (SAD) Sukhwinder Kaur.

The three-way battle for the vacant seat now places Sandhu in the lead, with SAD's Sukhwinder Kaur and Congress's Karanbir Singh trailing behind.

The Congress party has established an early lead in the vote counting for the Anta Assembly by-election in Rajasthan, confirming their initial advantage in the state.

Congress candidate Pramod Jain is currently ahead by a margin of 614 votes. Trailing behind him are Naresh Meena, an Independent candidate, and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate, Morpal Suman.

The Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) has taken a strong lead in the vote counting for the Ghatsila Assembly by-election in Jharkhand, confirming an early advantage for the regional party.

JMM candidate Somesh Chandra Soren is currently ahead of his competitors by a notable margin of 2,164 votes. Trailing behind him are Ramdas Murmu of the Jharkhand Loktantrik Krantikari Morcha and Babu Lal Soren of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

The counting for the Jubilee Hills Assembly by-election in Telangana is witnessing a tight contest, with the Congress party currently holding a narrow advantage.

Congress candidate Naveen Yadav V is leading the race by a slim margin of 47 votes. In this neck-and-neck fight, the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) candidate, Maganti Sunitha Gopinath, and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate, Deepak Reddy Lankala, are trailing closely behind.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is dominating the early count for the Nuapada Assembly by-election in Odisha. BJP candidate Jay Dholakia is currently ahead by a margin of 3,547 votes. The leading candidate is significantly ahead of the Biju Janata Dal (BJD)'s Snehangini Chhuria and the Congress party's Ghasi Ram Majhi, both of whom are trailing in the initial rounds.

The Jammu & Kashmir National Conference (JKNC) has established an early lead in the vote counting for the Budgam Assembly by-election in Jammu and Kashmir.

JKNC candidate Aga Syed Mahmood Al-Mosavi is currently ahead of his rivals, leading the contest by 624 votes. Trailing behind him are Muntazir Mehdi of the Jammu & Kashmir Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and an Independent candidate Nazir Ahmad Khan.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has made a strong start in the counting of votes for the Nagrota Assembly by-election in Jammu and Kashmir.

BJP's candidate, Devyani Rana, is currently leading the contest with a significant margin of 1,111 votes. She has established a lead over her main competitors, Harsh Dev Singh of the Jammu & Kashmir National Panthers Party and Shamim Begum of the Jammu & Kashmir National Conference, who are trailing in the initial count.

The Mizo National Front (MNF) surged ahead in the early stages of counting for the Dampa Assembly by-election in Mizoram. MNF's candidate, Dr. R Lalthangliana, is currently leading with a margin of 170 votes. Both the Zoram People's Movement (ZPM) candidate, Vanlalsailova, and the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) Lalhmingthanga are trailing in the initial count.

Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) candidate Sukhwinder Kaur is currently ahead of her rivals by a margin of 625 votes. Meanwhile, the candidates from the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Harmeet Singh Sandhu, and the Congress party, Karanbir Singh, are trailing behind in the early trends.

The counting of votes for bypoll in Jammu and Kashmir's Budgam began at 8:00 am on Friday, officials said. The counting, which would decide the fate of 17 candidates, is taking place at the Government Higher Secondary School in Budgam, they said.

All arrangements have been put in place for the smooth conduct of the exercise, officials added.

Ahead of the vote count for various by-elections on Friday, Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (JKNC) leader Sheikh Bashir Ahmad is hopeful of the party's candidate winning the Nagrota assembly by-elections.

"Umeed ke upar dunia kayam hai. We, too, are very hopeful. The administration's attitude has not been good. I had told them on the first day itself that their system is not good," the JKNC leader said.

The counting of votes polled in the by-election to the Dampa assembly seat in Mizoram's Mamit district began on Friday morning, amid tight security arrangements. The counting began at 8:00 am at the Mamit deputy commissioner complex.

District Election Officer Lalnunfela Chawngthu said postal ballots were being counted first, and then the votes cast in EVMs will be taken up. There will be five rounds of counting.

"There is only one counting hall and nine counting tables, including one for postal ballots, and each counting table will be monitored by a supervisor and two assistants," he said.

The counting of votes for the Nuapada assembly bypoll in Odisha began at 8:00 am on Friday under a three-tier security arrangement, an official said. District Election Officer (DEO)-cum-Nuapada Collector Madhusudan Dash said the counting of postal ballots was underway.

The counting of votes in EVMs started at 8:30 am at 14 tables. There will be 26 rounds of vote counting.

Tarn Taran District Public Relations Officer Inderjit Singh has provided a detailed update on the counting process for the ongoing elections, emphasising the robust security measures and transparent procedures put in place. 

He said, "We have two counting centres. In a total of 14 counters, there will be 16 rounds of counting and the result will be declared for each round. A micro-observer is present with each counting officer. The entire process is transparent. The counting agents were issued an identity card, and the police checked everyone's ID before letting them inside."

Amid tight security, counting of votes in the by-election for Jubilee Hills Assembly constituency, crucial for the ruling Congress government and also BRS, began on Friday with officials taking up postal ballots first. The counting process would be taken up in 10 rounds.

The officials said 48.49% of votes were cast on November 11 when the polling was held. The total number of eligible voters was 4.01 lakh, while 1.94 lakh voters exercised their franchise.

The Assembly by-election for Jharkhand's Ghatshila seat, necessitated by the death of sitting Jharkhand Mukti Morcha MLA Ramdas Soren, has escalated into a major battle between the ruling JMM and the Opposition BJP, even though the result will not threaten the Hemant Soren government's comfortable majority. There are 13 candidates in the the contest for assembly bypolls but the main contest is likely to be between Somesh Chandra Soren of the JMM and the BJP's Babulal Soren, son of former chief minister Champai Soren.

The assembly elections in Mizoram are a critical event for the entire Northeast region. The contest pitted the incumbent Mizo National Front (MNF) against the Zoram People's Movement (ZPM), the Congress, and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The MNF, which had secured 26 seats in 2018 assembly polls, faced a significant challenge from the ZPM (eight seats in 2018) and the Congress (five seats).

The by-election is seen as the first test of Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah's popularity amid Opposition allegations of poor governance during his last year in office. Abdullah's real target remains the People's Democratic Party (PDP) - the National Conference's (NC) main rival in the Valley. 

The Budgam by-election is widely viewed as a contest between the NC and the PDP, even though several other candidates, including from the BJP, are also in the race.

In Nagrota, the main contest is between Devyani Rana of the BJP, Shamim Begum of the National Conference and Harsh Dev Singh of J&K National Panthers Party.

The Jubilee Hills Assembly by-poll is widely seen as a test of strength for the Congress, an attempt by the Bharat Rashtra Samithi to revive its fortunes, and the Bharatiya Janata Party looking to establish itself in Telangana. There are a total of 59 candidates in the contest.

The electoral race is primarily a triangular battle between the Congress, the BRS, and the BJP. The Congress has fielded Naveen Yadav, who is backed by Asaduddin Owaisi's AIMIM, and the BJP has put up Lankala Deepak Reddy.

The BRS has nominated Maganti Sunitha, whose husband, Maganthi Gopinath, was the sitting MLA. 

For the BRS, a win will signal resurgence and validation, proving its resilience and ability to retain established strongholds in Hyderabad despite recent setbacks in the 2023 Assembly and 2024 Lok Sabha elections. It will also boost morale ahead of the 2028 Assembly election. And a loss would deepen that post-electoral decline, making it harder for the BRS to regain political relevance and consolidate its position as the main opposition force.

By-elections held on Tuesday saw a wide disparity in voter participation across India. High turnouts were recorded in Odisha's Nuapada (83.45%) and Mizoram's Dampa (82.34%). Other seats with strong polling included Rajasthan's Anta (80.32%), J&K's Nagrota (75.08%), and Jharkhand's Ghatshila (74.63%). Conversely, participation was significantly lower in Telangana's Jubilee Hills, which recorded the lowest figure at 48.49%, and in J&K's Budgam, which saw a 50.02% turnout. Tarn Taran in Punjab registered a moderate 60.95% turnout.

Counting of votes for 8 assembly seats across six states and the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir will begin soon. So will the counting in Bihar, where the opposition Mahagathbandhan and the ruling NDA are locked in a fierce contest.

Jubilee Hills, Telangana - The Jubilee Hills bypoll was held following the death of Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) MLA Maganti Gopinath in June this year. 

Nuapada, Odisha - The Nuapada assembly bypoll was held following the death of sitting Biju Janata Dal (BJD) MLA and former minister Rajendra Dholakia. 

Budgam, Jammu and Kashmir - The Budgam bypoll was necessitated due to Chief Minister Omar Abdullah's resignation from the constituency. 

Nagrota, Jammu and Kashmir - The Nagrota bypoll was held following the death of BJP legislator Devender Singh Rana last year. 

Anta, Rajasthan - The Anta bypoll was held following the disqualification of BJP MLA Kanwar Lal Meena. 

Dampa, Mizoram - The Dampa bypoll was held following the death of Mizo National Front (MNF) MLA Lalrintluanga Sailo. 

Tarn Taran, Punjab - The Tarn Taran bypoll was necessitated after the death of sitting AAP MLA Kashmir Singh Sohal in June this year. 

Ghatshila, Jharkhand - The Ghatsila bypoll was held following the death of JMM MLA and state minister Ramdas Soren in August.
