Healthy snacking... a concern which definitely strikes you multiple times in a day, especially if you are on a weight loss regime. If you do not have a snack with you when you experience hunger pangs, there is definitely room for cravings for sugary and salty crispies. Unhealthy snacking can interfere with your weight loss goals. Lifestyle coach Luke Coutinho has often advocated roasted black chanas as one of the healthiest snacks that could exist. It is rich in protein and fibre, and low in calories and can help you lose weight.

Roasted black chana: the healthiest snack in existence

In his live session on Facebook, Luke talks about how people opt for processed and packaged junk food for snacking when they don't have some snack handy on them. This is where roasted black chana comes to play. It is easily available, is inexpensive and offers a variety of health benefits.

Roasted black chanas are rich in protein and fibre, and are low in calories and fat. This makes roasted chanas the perfect healthy snacking option. You can have these at night, in the morning, in the afternoon and in evening.

Protein in roasted black chana

50 gms or four and a half tablespoons of chana can give you around 9 to gms of protein. If you want to increase protein content, combine half a handful of roasted peanuts with roasted black chana. Peanuts, along with being rich in protein, are also a rich source of heart healthy fats. Fats in peanuts are also good for your skin, hair and gut.

You can store the snack in a glass jar and keep it in your car or scooty, in your office and in bulk amounts at home. When storing them in car, make sure that you protect from heat or direct sunlight.

Avoid adding salt to roasted black chana

Adding salt to roasted black chanas can nearly nullify its benefits. Adding salt to roasted chana for improving it's taste can increase your appetite and increase water retention risks. Including more salty foods in your diet can be problematic if you have high blood pressure as well.

What's more is that roasted black chana is a great source of energy. You can have this even before you exercise. Roasted black chanas can make you feel energised throughout your workout. On days when you are facing low levels of energy and are reaching out for a third or fourth caffeine for energy boost, give a thought about roasted chanas too.

Make sure that you store roasted black chana in an airtight container to prevent it from getting soft too quickly. It will also help in retaining the natural taste of black chanas. "You do not need preservatives to increase shelf life of black chanas," informs Luke.

You can increase intake of black chana by adding it to salads. In case you feel gassy after consuming them, it is probably because of poor gut health (and not the chanas).
