Drinking Wine Weekly Connected to Improved Pregnancy Chances? Study Says There May Be a Link

A glass of red wine every week may improve your chances of pregnancy says a new US based study. The study conducted by researchers at Washington University in the US, claimed that women who are trying to conceive may have better chance at it, if they happen to drink red wine once every week. The researchers also clarified that while drinking wine had no apparent link in increasing fertility, but wine could help the ovarian reserve (the quantity of eggs present in the ovaries at any one time) of the hopeful mothers.

For the study the team analysed 135 women aged between 18 and 44 years to keep a diary detailing how much beer, spirits and red and white wine they drank each month. The team also used ultrasound scanners to count each woman's antral follicles, a proxy for the number of eggs she had left for the future.

The researchers revealed that women who consumed more than five

servings of red wine a month enjoyed a higher ovarian reserve-a measure of a woman's reproductive health.

The researchers also noted that white wine, beer and spirits were not linked to higher fertility. The molecule involved in upping the ovarian reserve in woman could be resveratrol. Resveratrol is an antioxidant that protects cells against biological stress and is found abundantly in red grapes, blueberries and cocoa, researchers said.
