New Delhi: Actress Deepika Padukone, in a series of angry tweets, has expressed disappointment over the recent attack on a rangoli, dedicated to her upcoming film Padmavati, made by an artist in Gujarat's Surat. The 31-year-old actress wrote, "Absolutely heart-breaking to see the recent attack on artist Karan and his artwork! Disgusting and appalling to say the least." She also tagged Information & Braodcasting minister Smriti Irani and tweeted, "This has to stop NOW & action must be taken." The rangoli of Deepika's Padmavati poster, which took 48 hours to make, was destroyed by a group of protesters on Tuesday. Read Deepika's tweets on the entire incident here.
 
 
 
 

The rangoli artist Karan had posted about the attack on Twitter and written, "#Padmavati Rangoli Controversy! A crowd of 100 people cried JAY SRI RAM AND rubbed out my 48hrs' intense work! Shocked." He also shared the pictures of the rangoli, along with the vandalised area.

Deepika plays Rani Padmini of Chittor in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's period drama Padmavati. Rani Padmini had performed jauhar (self-immolation) to protect their honour after Alauddin Khilji invaded Chittor fort. Ranveer Singh plays Alauddin Khilji while Shahid Kapoor features as Ratan Singh, Rani Padmini's husband.

Meanwhile, after Padmavati's first posters, featuring Deepika Padukone as Rani Padmini, were released, the Shri Rajput Karni Sena, an outfit of the Rajput community, objected to the nature of reference to Alauddin Khilji. In protest, they had burnt the posters outside Rajmandir Cinema Hall in Jaipur. Before that, the outfit had objected to the portrayal of certain historical facts in the movie. The outfit claimed that the facts have been distorted and hence, they will not allow Padmavati's release unless Mr Bhansali shows them the film. The sets of the film in Jaipur and Mumbai were also attacked earlier.

Padmavati releases on December 1.
