The NDA is a composition of three parties - BJP, Janata Dal (United) and Hidustan Awam Morcha (HAM), while the Mahagathbandhan is the name given to alliance of RJD, Congress and left parties.

The NDA alliance is being led by Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, while the Mahagathbadhan is led by the RJD supremo Lalu Yadav's younger son Tejashwi Yadav.
