Oxford Dictionary To Announce Hindi Word Of The Year 2017 In January
Oxford Dictionary will announce the first ever Hindi Word of the Year 2017 in January 2018. Oxford English Dictionary releases four updates in a year: March, June, September and December; 70 Indian words were added to the dictionary in the recent update. Suggestions for the Hindi Word of the Year were asked till 29 November. Among the panel members are: Namita Gokhale; former Associate Editor of AajTak, Saurabh Dwivedi; Associate Professor at Ranchi University, Poonam Nigam Sahay; Senior Editorial Manager, OUP, Malika Ghosh and Kritika Agarwal, Language Champion for Oxford's Hindi Living Dictionary.

The chosen word should reflect the ethos, mood or preoccupations of the year,' reports news agency IANS.
Word of the Year 2016 is 'post-truth' (meaning: relating to or denoting circumstances in which objective facts are less influential in shaping public opinion than appeals to emotion and personal belief). Taking into consideration the 'spike in frequency this year in the context of the EU referendum in the United Kingdom and the presidential election in the United States,' Oxford Dictionary decided on choosing 'post-truth' as the Word of the Year for 2016. 'Post-truth has gone from being a peripheral term to being a mainstay in political commentary, now often being used by major publications without the need for clarification or definition in their headlines,' it further adds.
In the September, 70 Indian words were added to the Dictionary: abba, achcha, anna, bachcha, bada din, bada, bapu, bas, bhindi, chacha, chakka jam, chamcha, chaudhuri, chhi-chhi, chup, dadagiri, desh, devi, didi, diya, dum, funda, gosht, gulab jamun, gully, haat, Jai, Jhuggi, Ji, jugaad, keema, kund, maha, mata, mirch masala, mirch, nagar, nai, namkeen, natak, nivas, sevak, sevika, surya namaskar, tappa, timepass, udyog, vada, ek dum, speed breaker, blank call, hydel, lunch home.
