Born in a traditional joint family, in Amdara village in Satna District in Madhya Pradesh, Surabhi Gautam, in her own words, had to study sans electricity when she was in school. As a child she also struggled with rheumatic fever and constantly battled with the fear of death. Today, she stands tall as an IES and IAS qualified woman and is an inspiration to millions in the country. Her story is of grit and determination and proves what a woman can achieve with self-belief.
She worked against all odds and proved to be academically talented scoring 100 out of 100 in mathematics examination in school. In class 10 board exam she scored full marks in both mathematics and science and she was in the state merit list.
As a stroke of chance, Surabhi first thought of UPSC when she had just cleared her class 10 board exams. Having made her way to the state merit list, she was asked by an interviewer for a local newspaper what were here future plans and she ended up saying she wanted to become a 'collector'. This is where her illustrious journey began.
In class 12 board exam she again proved her mettle and got Abdul Kalam Scholarship for scoring maximum marks in the Science stream. She went on complete Bachelor of Engineering degree form RGPV Bhopal.
During her engineering days, she identified the disadvantage she had for not being fluent in English. She worked on her subconscious and in her own words forced her dreams to transform from being in Hindi to being bilingual. She not only worked on her vocab, but also on her accent and presentation. She says that the road to learn English was not easy but she never gave up.
After college she appeared for SAIL, BARC, GATE, ISRO, MPPSC exams and after six months she wrote IES exam and qualified all of them. She cleared Indian Engineering Services (IES) exam with AIR 1 and then secured AIR 50 in UPSC Civil Services.
Her journey is not just plain inspiring but is a proof that any hurdles in life can be overcome with the right attitude and determination to prove your worth.
