Shimla school to allow Sikh students to wear full turban
Shimla: The controversy over wearing full-sized turban by Sikh students in a leading missionary school in Shimla ended with the school authorities agreeing to allow the students to wear the headgear, the student's father said.

The row that had erupted in March when a Sikh student of Class XII was reportedly verbally told by Principal John Bosco of St Edward's School to wear only 'patka' (under-turban) and students were barred from wearing the full-sized turban in the school.

The father of the student Jaspal Singh today said the Principal gave them in writing that the students will be allowed to wear the full-sized turbans from Monday.

Parents of some Sikh students had approached the local administration on Thursday regarding the issue after the school refused to withdraw its March 2 order.

They said the students had been wearing 'patka' in the school since then.

Shimla Deputy Commissioner Onkar Sharma had directed the school Principal to settle the issue on a priority basis.

St Edward's School boasts of alumni like Vice President M. Hamid Ansari, former cricketer Kapil Dev, former Punjab Police chief K.P.S Gill and union minister Virbhadra Singh.
