In an emergency, it's just Sawai Man Singh hospital for Jaipur

Jaipur: Mismanagement and lack of facilities at district hospitals like Jaipuria and Harbaux Kanwatia hospitals has not only burdened Sawai Man Singh (SMS) Hospital, which is a centre for special care, but has also caused much inconvenience to people in these areas.

The inability of the district hospitals to deliver proper medical facilities forces patients with minor ailments to go to private hospitals, which have mushroomed in the area around Kanwatia hospital.

"Jaipuria Hospital is closest to our home, but we still prefer to go to SMS in case of an emergency as there is a lot of mismanagement at Jaipuria. Although doctors are available here, other patient care facilities are in complete disarray," said Puneet Sharma, who lives near Jaipuria Hospital.

Though Jaipuria Hospital is well-staffed, the wards are quite ill-planned. The labour rooms in Jaipuria Hospital, along with all other wards, are on the third floor but there is no lift to carry the patients. Also, to reach the hospital's X-Ray room one has to walk across the corridor to the other side of the hospital.

The accounts of Medical Relief Society have been receiving a lot of money, the authorities at Jaipuria Hospital say that they do not have budget to bring the desired changes in the hospital.

"We are planning to shift the labour room to the ground floor and we need a lot of other changes but we do not have the budget," Dr NK Vashistha, principal medical officer at Jaipuria hospital, said.

Harbaux Kanwatia Hospital in Shastri Nagar, too, has a similar story to tell. "The Kanwatia Hospital is expected to provide treatment to the trauma patients of nearby areas and the poor patients in the residential colonies and slums here. But it has failed to deliver on both counts. We have represented the issue many times but no one at the district administration listens," Imtiyaz Bhati, a former councillor of the area said.
