Chandigarh: Two persons were arrested for selling two-headed snakes illegally to people who sought to attain "spiritual" or "sexual power", police said.

In a joint operation with the Wildlife department, police recovered three rare 'Sand Boa' breed of two-headed snakes - 'double-headed wonder'.

The accused have been identified as Ranbir, resident of Janta Colony, Naya Gaon in Mohali and Vijay, resident of Jhuggi Shastri Nagar, Mani Majra, police said.

Accused Mr Vijay, who belongs to the Nath community, used to catch snakes, especially 'Sand Boa' breed, from jungles in Haryana, UP and Rajasthan, police said.

He used to sell them at high prices with the help of his associates to "needy persons" who prepare "drugs" - especially to improve sex power, police said.

They said some people also used to keep these breeds of snakes at their homes to get spiritual powers.

Acting on a tip off, police had sent a decoy customer to both of them who struck the deal at Rs 15 lakh for one snake and handed over Rs 50,000 as advance money.

Then a team of Crime Branch and Wildlife department apprehended both the accused along with a bag.

They were booked under relevant sections of Wild Life Protection Act-1972 and IPC.
