Catch of the Day: Sky diving into a stadium

Michigan: Caught this 10 days late, but Sgt Adam Sniffen's feat cannot to be given the go-by.

The US paratrooper of the 101st Airborne Division parachuted into a packed stadium carrying the game ball for a football match last week. He also carried the American flag and makes a fairly spectacular sight on this YouTube video as he descends.

Over a 100,000 people cheering, already whipped into the frenzy that is de rigueur at a football match, failed to intimidate Sniffen, who floated with elan into the stadium and landed where he had to. Very exciting.

But in anticipation of the final descent, do not miss the part on the video where Sgt Sniffen begins his jump. The first shot as the paratrooper steps out of his plane is positively vertiginous. And much of the descent is seen almost through the eyes of the diver.

You catch those rare nuances because apart from holding flag and ball, the very dexterous Sergeant had a head-mounted camera that he controlled with his tongue.

According to a Wired.com report, Sgt Sniffen is an expert paratrooper, "who hasn't missed a target in more than 800 career jumps."
