Highlights from #BanegaSwasthIndia: 12-Hour Swasthagraha Comes To An End

The 12-hour Swasthagraha hopes to start a movement to ensure hygiene and nutrition for all, as only then can a strong foundation be laid for the future pf a healthy society.

The 12-hour Swasthagraha is inspired by the Satyagraha that defined Mahatma Gandhi's struggle for not just India's Independence, but also showed the world the power of mobilising people to embrace truth and non-violence. To mark the 150th anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, a Swasthagraha is being initiated to make India not just cleaner but also healthier.

We thought that we should do something for fitness also along with cleanliness. The Prime Minister also started the Fit India movement. One need not got to the gym to remain fit. We have combined Fit India movement and Swachh Bharat Mission to promote health and cleanliness. So in this initiative, you have to pick up waste while you jog.

During this period we have also tried to clean the water resources by curbing sewage discharge and industrial discharge in the rivers. We feel that we have a responsibility towards the environment. Aviation contributes to 1-2 percent of the pollution. We started a flight from Dehradun to Delhi using bio jet-fuel. The enthusiasm towards this flight was so much that when the first flight of this plane landed in Delhi, 6 cabinet ministers were present. We tell our pilots what speed to fly at, what height to fly at and other ways to cut emissions. We are using electric vehicles on the ground. By 2030, we have targetted to fly most of our passengers on bio-fuel.

Reaching out to the people is a huge challenge in immunisation. There are 28,000 cold chain points from where immunisation is implemented but we still have not been able to reach out to 100 per cent of the people. To save children from dying, immunisation in critical and the present coverage is 70 per cent but we are determined to go for 100 per cent soon. In 2015, Delhi had 15,500 cases of dengue, we were doing whatever we could but still there were 60 cases of deaths. But then we came up with a mass movement to fight dengue - 10 minutes and check your home and help fight Delhi dengue. Now this yer we have had 286 cases till yesterday.

Like dengue, we are also fighting air pollution. Delhi's air pollution has in good category as opposed to earlier when it was in the harmful category.

Highlights of what Ram Vilas Paswan said on Swasthagraha:

- In 2014 when the Swachh Bharat campaign was launched, many people were skeptical. But today the campaign has reached a pan India level. The impact is very well visible.

- 95 lakh tonne of waste is produced every year in India. 38 lakh tonne goes in to rivers or landfills. Within this waste, plastic waste is not recycled or disposed of safely.

- Today we are facing such a water crisis, we must work on providing potable water in a targetted manner. Clean water and uncontaminated food need to be provided to people.

Aaditya Thackeray: I have observed in the 9 years of political life, most of our electoral issues come from people. Only now we see sanitation and cleanliness become an issue for the people and they expect the political leader to speak about it. Similarly, health issues like preventive healthcare, mid-day meals, basic sanitation, hygiene are coming from the people slowly and the political parties must address it. We need to connect with the last mile on health issues especially in terms of preventive healthcare.

Kriti Sanon: Nutrition is very important. What we eat is what we are. A lot of food is not organically grown, it is coated with preservatives, artificial colors and is ingested with chemical fertilisers and insecticides. I am not really sure if what we eat has nutrients.

Dr. Reddy on Swasthagraha: A long time ago when I visited some villages, I saw sadness and so we decided to do something to change this. Today, we measure the health parameters of all the people in the 170 hamlets we have adopted. The severe malnutrition and other deficiency diseases were very prominent. I am happy to say that this situation has changed. Today when a woman is pregnant, she is given care from very early on. Nutrition and cleanliness are extremely important during pregnancy. I have witnessed how effectively in Indore and Ambikapur, household segregation and waste collection works. People themselves have segregated plastic and municipality created plastic pellets from waste plastic which they sold further and generated income.

Similarly, we are trying to run buses, truck and other transport from bio-CNG.Through waste management, we are also making bio compost. It's been a fabulous experiment with sanitation. It has taken a shape of a 'Jan Andolan'. Perhaps the largest behaviour change movement ever. People have taken 'swachhata', adopted it and made it their own. People like Amitabh Bachchan and NDTV have done tremendously to raise awareness around the cause but a lot is still to be done especially to sustain the change: Param Iyer, Secretary Ministry of Jal Shakti
