Volatile Sensex Edges Up; HDFC Bank Gains
The Sensex opened on a flat note amid high volatility in trades on Thursday on the back of some amount of selling pressure visible in the healthcare and oil & gas pockets.

The broader Nifty also opened on a flat note. HDFC Bank which is undergoing a share sale was trading on a positive note. Bharat Petroleum, Asian Paints, BHEL and TCS were also among the gainers from the Nifty basket.

Meanwhile, the Asian markets were trading on a mixed note. Japan's Nikkei was down 1 per cent while Hang Seng was quoting higher by 0.6 per cent.

Overnight, the US markets closed on a negative note. Nasdaq and NYSE Composite Index slipped after the European Central Bank abruptly cancelled its acceptance of Greek bonds in return for funding. The move means the Greek central bank will have to provide its banks with tens of billions of euros of additional emergency liquidity in coming weeks.

Back home, BPCL was the top Nifty gainer, the stock jumped 2.5 per cent to 739 in the opening trades. Asian Paints, Axis Bank, Wipro, Coal India, HDFC Bank, TCS and BHEL were also trading in the green. On the other hand, Cairn India, Sesa Sterlite, ONGC, Cipla, Tata Power, Tata Motors and ICICI Bank were among the top losers.

The broader markets were in line with the benchmark indices. The BSE mid-cap and small-cap indices were up 0.2 power cent each.

At 9:30 AM, the Sensex was up 42 points at 28,925 and the Nifty was up 11 points at 8,735.
