Reliance Jio’s homegrown TV app JioTV has broken into the top ten list of most downloaded apps from Google Play Store in India, according to the highly watched "Mary Meeker Internet trends 2017" report. The entertainment app, which allows Jio users to watch 430 Indian language and English TV channels, jumped from the 301st position last year to ninth this year, surpassing Facebook Lite, the report said. JioTV also allows users to record shows and has a seven-day catch up policy, allowing users to watch and record programs aired up till a week before.
Launched in September last year, JioTV started out with about 200 channels in mostly regional content. Since then, JioTV has increased the number of its live stream channels to 400 plus in 15 regional languages – the highest by any TV service provider – effectively making the app a set-top box for mobile phone users with the only cost involved being data usage charges. In April, JioTV added HBO HD to its list of available channels.
Jio’s growth in the live TV streaming segment was further helped by the lack of competition in the segment. While Airtel has not entered the segment, Idea and Vodafone have less than 100 channels each on their TV streaming apps.
