SUVs race ahead amid falling auto sales: 10 facts

 

  1. Car sales: Sales in the entry segment were down 33 per cent, while volumes in hatchback and sedan segments declined by nearly 28 per cent.
  2. Sales of utility vehicles (UV) increased by nearly 35 per cent year-on-year. 
  3. Mahindra & Mahindra: Bolero volumes increased by 14 per cent year-on-year; Quanto and XUV500 volumes also remained strong. However, Xylo sales fell 33 per cent and Scorpio sales were down 2 per cent year-on-year.
  4. Maruti Suzuki: It continued to outperform the industry growth led by strong Swift and D'zire volumes. Maruti's market share was 53 per cent in February 2013 compared to 45 per cent in the eleven months of the fiscal so far.
  5. Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEMs): Most of their major models like GM Beat, Ford Figo, Honda City, Hyundai i10, Nissan Sunny, Toyota Etios and Liva saw sharp year-on-year declines in February.
  6. High-selling models such as Hyundai i10 and Verna, Maruti D'zire, Wagon R, VW Polo, etc. managed year-on-year growth.
  7. Two-wheeler domestic sales declined by 3 per cent year-on-year.
  8. Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India's (HMSI) 2-wheeler market share increased by 130 basis points (month-on-month) to 19.3 per cent.
  9. Hero MotoCorp, India's biggest two-wheeler maker's share declined by around 140 basis points from last month.
  10. Bajaj Auto's market share remained largely stable in February.
