Tata Power

Tata Power is one of the largest integrated power utility established as a licensee in Mumbai with ambitious plans not only in power but also in energy and broadband communications. Tata Power has operations in India, Singapore, Indonesia, South Africa and Bhutan with operations in 35 locations nationwide.

The company has over 4,000 employees. The major thermal power plants are located at Trombay in Mumbai, Mundra in Gujarat, Jojobera and Maithon in Jharkhand, Kalinganagar in Odisha, Haldia in West Bengal and Belgaum in Karnataka. In 2016, Tata Power made foray into the renewable market in India by acquiring Welspun Renweables for a record price of $1.3 billion, the largest acquisition in the renewables sector in India.

The company shares are listed as TATAPOWER on stock exchanges BSE and NSE. As on 15 November 2017, Tata Group held 32.47% shares in Tata Power.


Background

The company was set up in 1915. It was earlier known as Tata Electric. In 1922, the company commissioned another hydro power station, after the one at Khapoli, in Bhivpuri with an installed capacity of 40MW, that was subsequently upgraded to 72 MW. The third hydro power station of 90MW came up at Bhira, which was subsequently upgraded to 150MW. In 2006-07, the company completes the acquisition of 30% in Indonesian Coal Mines, PT Kaltim Prima Coal (KPC) and PT Arutmin Indonesia, as well as trading companies from PT Bumi Resources. History

The company commenced as Tata Hydroelectric Power Supply Company in 1910. Tata Power established a first hydro-electric project in Khapoli Maharashtra in 1915. The company amalgated with Andhra Valley Power Supply Company in 1916.
