GAIL is an integrated energy company in the hydrocarbon sector which is engaged in gas marketing. It is the largest state-owned natural gas processing and distribution company in India. It is headquartered in New Delhi.

Background
GAIL was initially given the responsibility of construction, operation and maintenance of the Hazira, Vijaypur and Jagdishpur (HVJ) pipeline project. It was one of the largest cross-country natural gas pipeline projects in the world. GAIL began its city gas distribution in New Delhi in 1997 by setting up nine compressed natural gas (CNG) stations.
History
GAIL was established on 16th August, 1984 with an objective of creating gas sector infrastructure for sustained development of the natural gas sector in the country. The company was formerly known as Gas Authority of India Limited. It is India's principal gas transmission and marketing company.
Product and services
GAIL's products and services includes natural gas and liquid petroleum gas (LPG); natural gas trading; petrochemicals; LPG and other liquid hydrocarbons; city gas distribution. Some other products are GAIL TEL, exploration and production (E&P), City Gas and Power Generation. GAIL is engaged in activities, including transportation through pipeline; manufacture of basic chemicals, fertilizer and nitrogen compounds, plastics and synthetic rubber in primary forms; extraction of crude petroleum; extraction of natural gas, and electric power generation, transmission and distribution.
