The rupee traded at Rs 49.24 per dollar on the Interbank Foreign Exchange market in trade at 12.18 pm amid firm stock markets.

Dealers said continued foreign capital inflows in the Indian market and selling of dollar by exporters, mainly kept rupee's sentiment firm.

The rupee had lost 17 paise to close at Rs 49.36/37 against the dollar yesterday due to fresh demand for the American currency from importers.

Meanwhile, the BSE benchmark Sensex regained 18,000 points level by gaining 277.98 points, or 1.56 per cent, to 18,126.55 in afternoon trade.
