Long power cuts in Delhi may be on their way out. Minister for Power Civil Supply Department & Rural Development, Haroon Yusuf said in an interview to NDTV Profit that the administration was now adequately prepared to meet the city’s soaring power demand.

The minister, however, did not specify how Delhi plans to meet this deficit.

Delhi experienced acute power cuts during the scorching months of May and June due as power demand peaked to 5640 megawatts, while the city could only manage to supply 5500 megawatts. Moreover, a delayed arrival of the monsoon made the situation worse.

According to a data from the Central Electricity Authority (CEA), scarce supply of fuel has led to power shortage of over 11,000 megawatts (MW) during April-June.

“We had made a summer action plan in February itself as we had anticipated the power demand in Delhi to go up to 5500 mw. But the summer was really bad,” Yusuf said.

He also laid part of the blame to neighbouring states overdrawing power. “When other states overdraw power, it affects Delhi. We have spoken to the Union power minister Sushil Kumar Shinde about the same,” he added.

“The power situation in Delhi will be normal as proper arrangements will be made to ensure sufficient supply,” he assured.
