New Delhi: Auto major Mahindra & Mahindra on Monday reported a 7.18 per cent decline in total sales at 35,175 units in August.

Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) had sold 37,897 units in the same month last year, it said in a statement.

M&M's domestic sales declined 5.72 per cent to 33,145 units last month as against 35,159 units a year ago.

Sales of passenger vehicles, including Scorpio, XUV 500, Xylo, Bolero and Verito, stood at 14,140 units compared with 15,821 units in August 2013, down 10.62 per cent.

Four-wheel commercial vehicle sales declined 5.41 per cent to 12,975 units in August 2014 as against 13,718 units in the year-ago month, it said.

Exports dropped 25.85 per cent to 2,030 units from 2,738 units in the same period a year earlier.

"In spite of our overall sales remaining flat in August, we continue to be optimistic due to the industry's enhanced business confidence which is reflected by the manufacturing sector showing signs of revival," M&M chief executive-automotive division and international operations (AFS) Pravin Shah said.

"The automotive industry, including us, is hopeful of a better demand leading up to the ensuing festival season," he added.
