"For all new and existing customers upgrading to 4G handsets, Idea will provide additional 3GB data on these rental plans, till December 31, 2017," Idea said.
The extra 3GB free data for new 4G handset customers will make it 6 GB and 11 GB free data each month, on Rs 499 and Rs 999 ultimate plans, respectively.
Free data being provided to customers under the new plan will be 3G or 4G, depending on circle and handset.
The data will be on 2G in the circles where Idea operates under 3G roaming agreements until 4G is launched later this year.
This offer comes on the heels of rivals Bharti Airtel and Vodafone offering attractive plans to their customers amid intense competition in the sector after Reliance Jio's entry.
Market leader Airtel had last week offered a special scheme offering free data for 12 months to customers who switch to its 4G network. Customers - including existing Airtel subscribers - upgrading to a new 4G handset could also avail the offer, which is open till February 28, 2017.
Under this Airtel offer, customers will get free mobile data of 3 GB every month till December 31, 2017 with select prepaid and postpaid packs. This free data benefit will be over and above the pack/plan benefits, the company had said.
Telecom operators are aggressively announcing schemes to attract more customers and to counter excessive competition due to Reliance Jio's entry in September, analysts said.
Vodafone had also launched a "SuperHour" scheme offering unlimited 4G/3G data an hour for its prepaid customers in a pack priced at Rs 16. 2G customers could also enjoy the "SuperHour" data offer at only Rs 5, the telecom giant had said.
