Flipkart's Big Billion Sale and Amazon's Great Indian Festival sale are in full swing

With Flipkart's Big Billion Sale and Amazon's Great Indian Festival sale in full swing, the festive season is one of the busiest periods for e-commerce giants as well as food and retail companies looking to captilise on the increased consumer spending during this time. And to meet the additional demand and extend prompt services to festival shoppers, businesses will hire about 1.3 lakh temporary workers between September to December, says human resource consulting firm Randstad India.

Hiring temporary staff fulfills functions such as sales, logistics and customer support. Companies hire temporary staff during festive seasons to handle sudden spurts in business.

"Seasonal demand for temp workforce is expected to be on the same lines or be marginally higher than those of last year's levels," said Yeshab Giri, head of specialties at, Randstad India.

Yeshab Giri forecast at least 1.2 lakh to 1.3 lakh seasonal jobs to be created over the festive period across industries.

Leading e-tailing firms Flipkart and Amazon are expected to account for bulk of the hiring in the e-commerce space, a sector which is expected to account for around 50,000 new temporary jobs.

"E-tailing firms are also expected to match their previous year job creation numbers owing to the large sales events from leading two e-commerce firms(Flipkart and Amazon).

Around 50,000 jobs are expected to be created in this space," Mr Giri said.

Hiring of temporary workers to meet festive season demand starts around August and continues till December.

The festive season begins from the onset of Navratri in India and continues till the New Year. Stock clearance sales are also held in January by both online stores brick and motor businesses to clear stock and make way for new products in the new year.
