Bharti Airtel CEO Sanjay Kapoor quits

Bharti Airtel chief executive officer Sanjay Kapoor has quit the company. Mr Kapoor will leave the company on February 28, the company said in a statement.

The move comes a fortnight before Bharti Airtel is scheduled to report its third quarter earnings.

Gopal Vittal, currently group director of special projects will take over as the company's India CEO, effective March 1, the company said in a statement.

"After almost 15 years of illustrious innings at Bharti Group, Sanjay Kapoor, CEO - India & South Asia, Bharti Airtel, has decided to pursue his future aspirations outside of Bharti," the company said in a statement to the BSE.

India is the biggest market for Bharti, which operates in Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and 17 African countries.

Shares in the company closed 4.8 per cent higher at Rs 345.25 on the BSE while the broader Sensex was up 0.4 per cent at 19,990.
