AirAsia May Offer Fliers Wi-Fi On-Board Soon

Low-cost carrier AirAsia may soon offer its fliers Wi-Fi internet connectivity on-board. A trial-run for in-flight Wi-Fi service was conducted by AirAsia on Wednesday.

"It's a wrap! Tested LINE, WeChat & WhatsApp for our Wi-Fi onboard trial! Thanks AirAsia Allstars for your participation!," AirAsia tweeted.

LINE, WeChat, and WhatsApp are popular messaging apps.

AirAsia CEO Tony Fernandes also took to micro-blogging site Twitter and promised that the service would be affordable.

"Exciting few days. Our WiFi on board tested well. A very affordable one. Premium flex and today a low cost courier service," he tweeted.

AirAsia is yet to reveal from when the service would be made available and on which routes it will offer in-flight Wi-Fi.

AirAsia also tweeted a picture through messaging app LINE while on-board.

"This photo was sent via LINE onboard just now! Our Allstars volunteers looking excited for Wi-Fi onboard, are you?," the airline tweeted.

Indian authorities have so far not allowed the use of Wi-Fi in their skies. However, India's aviation regulator DGCA (Directorate General of Civil Aviation) recently lifted the ban on using portable electronic devices (PED) including mobile phones while flying. India's national carrier Air India had earlier said that it would request the authorities to lift the ban on Wi-Fi use.
