Army Kept on Standby in Assam's Kokrajhar

Kokrajhar in Assam is tense after 11 killings.

New Delhi: The Army has been kept on standby in the trouble-torn Kokrajhar district in Assam to deal with any situation arising out of the killing of 11 people by NDFB(S) militants.

The Assam government has conveyed to the Home Ministry that the district administration has requested the local army commander to keep troops in alert and ready for deployment at short notice if the situation in Kokrajhar deteriorated, official sources said today.

The Home Ministry also dispatched 1,000 paramilitary personnel to Assam to help the state government in maintaining law and order in violence hit areas.

With the additional paramilitary personnel, the total number of central armed police deployed in Assam has gone up to 4,300.

Sources said following the killings by the Bodo insurgent group, situation in Kokrajhar and adjoining areas continued to be tense but under control.

Security forces were keeping strict vigil and remained alert to foil any design by anti-social elements to disturb peace.

11 people were killed by the NDFB-Songbijit militants in separate incidents in Kokrajhar district since last night.
