23-year-old Amanat (NOT her real name) is stable after being admitted to a hospital in Singapore, said Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad. Amanat left India last night on a highly-specialized air ambulance accompanied by a team of doctors and her parents.
The student was raped by six men, and battered with an iron rod on a moving bus in Delhi during the assault of monstrous proportions earlier this month.
She has left India amid seething public fury. Huge protests in Delhi over the weekend were scarred by outbursts of violence. A constable trying to control the crowd died in hospital on Tuesday.
Amanat arrived at Singapore's Mount Elizabeth Hospital early on Thursday "in an extremely critical condition", the hospital said in a statement. Large parts of her intestines were removed in Delhi after being irreversibly damaged during the brutal assault on her. She went through three major surgeries in the last 10 days.
The head of the hospital which treated her in New Delhi hinted that the Mount Elizabeth Hospital, located in Singapore's Orchard Road shopping district, was chosen for its modern organ transplant facility.
"The said hospital has a state-of-art multi-organ transplant facility. The arrangement has also been made for the family to accompany her as the treatment may take longer period," B.D. Athani, medical superintendent of Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi, said on Wednesday.
The decision to approve the 23-year-old's transfer was taken at a cabinet meeting in New Delhi on Wednesday but the government left it to medical experts to decide whether it was safe to move Amanat. Passports and visas for the student and her parents were organized by the Ministry of External Affairs in a matter of hours.
