Amritsar Village Tense After Violent Protests Over Release of Terror Convicts
Amritsar: At least a dozen policemen including a Deputy Superintendent of Police were injured on Sunday as they tried to stop a procession by Sikh hardliners in Ajnala town of Amritsar district.

The procession was in support of the demand to release terrorists who were prison on militancy charges and have completed their jail term.

The clash broke out when despite police warning the supporters of 85-year-old Surat Singh Khalsa, who has been on fast since January for release of former Sikh militants from jails, tried to broke police cordon resulting into stone pelting forcing the police to resort to use of force.

An undeclared curfew like situation prevails in Ajnala even as the administration is trying to broker truce with the hardliners.

The police have also kept several protesters under preventive custody.
