Wife of NRI facing trial in US released

Washington: Sangeeta Mann, the wife of a detained Indian American doctor, who is facing trial in the US for illegally possessing at least 98 live grenades and guns, was released on Tuesday after their daughter promised her mother will not flee the country.

District Judge Beth Deere ordered the release of Sangeeta Mann, 48, after her daughter Shivani told the court that her mother would never leave her children alone and flee
the country.

They are of Indian descent, but Shivani testified her mother does not speak Hindi, and has only visited India twice in the last 20 years, local media reports said.

Sangeeta was arrested on Friday and spent the weekend in jail. She was arrested in government's investigation into the numerous guns and grenades found at the couple's home near Russelville in Arkansas.

In March, police had discovered as many as 98 live grenades buried in the woods near the home of Randeep Mann.

Mann remains in custody, charged with illegally possessing the grenades. During court hearing investigative officials said Randeep Mann is the primary suspect in the car bombing that injured Dr Trent Pierce, the chairman of the state medical board, said Today THV 11.

The Arkansas doctor has been in custody since his March 4 arrest on a single charge of possessing unregistered machine guns and explosives only permitted for the military.

He is scheduled to be arraigned on the new charges on August 18.
