A 25-year-old Uzbek resident of New York pleaded guilty on Friday to conspiring to provide material support for the Islamic State extremist group in Iraq and Syria, prosecutors said.
Abdurasul Hasanovich Juraboev posted a message online last August offering to kill President Barack Obama or bomb New York's beach resort of Coney Island if ordered to do so by the IS group.
He now faces up to 15 years in prison.
Juraboev was arrested at home in Brooklyn in February. He had bought a plane ticket for Turkey, due to leave in March, from where prosecutors said he planned to join up with jihadists.
He was arrested as part of a swoop on four terror suspects and pleaded not guilty at his first court appearance.
"The defendant planned to travel to Syria to wage jihad... and was prepared to commit a terrorist attack on American soil if he were not able to make that trip," said Kelly Currie, acting US attorney for the eastern district of New York.
Juraboev is the third foreigner in as many days to plead guilty or be sentenced for terrorism in the federal court in Brooklyn.
A Nigerian, who once wrote rap lyrics for Al-Qaeda in Yemen, was jailed 22 years on Wednesday and an Albanian, who wanted to travel to Pakistan to join extremists, for 16 years on Thursday.
The head of the FBI, James Comey, told the Senate select committee on intelligence in July that upwards of 200 Americans have traveled or attempted to travel to Syria to join IS.
