One of three Americans who helped thwart a terror attack on a train in France, was recovering Friday after being stabbed in his home state of California, hospital officials said.
Spencer Stone "is awake, able to get out of bed and in good spirits," a statement by the UC Davis Medical Center said.
The hospital also upgraded the 23-year-old airman's condition from serious to fair.
Stone was stabbed three times in the upper torso on Thursday after getting into a fight with a group of friends as he was leaving a bar in Sacramento.
He underwent two hours of surgery and is expected to recover, according to the hospital.
Police said they were looking for two Asian men suspected in the attack.
A source close to the investigation said Stone had apparently tried to intervene on behalf of a woman being harassed when an argument escalated and he got stabbed.
Stone and two of his friends helped foil an attack in August on a Paris-bound train.
They have since been hailed as heroes both in the United States and in France, where they were awarded the Legion of Honor, the country's highest decoration.
