New York: Some enterprising thieves in Italy have used a vacuum cleaner to suck out USD 4,000 from a self-service checkout machine.

The theft took place at a gas station in Salerno, near Naples, police said.

The gang of thieves pierced through the cash box at the gas station last week. They then used a vacuum cleaner, pointed it inside and sucked up USD 4,000.

By the time police arrived on the scene, the gang had escaped, according to the Italian newspaper 'Corriere del Mezzogiorno'.

Police are hunting for the suspects. It is not yet known how many crooks were involved in the theft, 'New York Daily News' reported.

Police are appealing to the public for information.
