Rooftop gunman kills woman trying to shield children

New York: Police say a gunman opened fire near a public school in Brooklyn, killing one parent and injuring an 11-year-old and another parent.

The shooting started at about 2:30 pm (local time) yesterday. Police are looking into whether the gunman was firing from a rooftop where shell casings were found.

Police say the 34-year-old woman who was killed was seen hovering over students to protect them as the shots were fired.

A 31-year-old woman was taken to an area hospital after she was hit in the arm and chest.

Department of Education spokeswoman Margie Feinberg says the victims were behind the building that houses the school when gunshots rang out.

Police are searching for suspects and offering a $12,000 reward. It's not believed the women were the intended targets.
