Recent attacks on Indians in Australia

Australia: Indians living in Australia have witnessed a spate of attacks which has found its reverberations in India also. The Indian community faces the stark reality of being unsafe Down Under. And these attacks are bound to affect the diplomatic ties between the world's smallest continent and one of the world's largest democracy.

January 19: A 25-year-old taxi driver was assaulted by two passengers in Melbourne after he refused to take their friends along.The Australian Police released images of a couple suspected in the attack, but denied it was racially motivated.

January 18: Two Australian men from Victoria were arrested for assaulting a 23-year-old Indian taxi driver in Geelong city. The driver suffered bruises and swelling on the face and head.

January 16: An Indian student-cum-cabbie was threatened with knife by his two passengers in Ballart, in Victoria province. On the same day, another Indian taxi driver was abused and punched by his four passengers, again in Ballart. One of them also spat on him. The police again insisted that these cases were not racially-motivated.

January 15: A taxi driver was beaten by a drunk passenger in Victoria. Verbal threats escalated to a physical assault when the taxi stopped at a service station, the police said.

January 14: Paul John Brogden, 48-year-old local man, was arrested, jailed for three months and fined 1500 Australian dollars after he pleaded guilty of holding out a threat to kill 24-year-old Indian taxi driver Satheesh Thatipamula.

January 11: A 28-year-old Indian was reportedly attacked by a group of Australian-born boys and girls at Coogee beach in Sydney.

January 9:  Twenty nine-year-old Jaspreet Singh was set ablaze by a group of four attackers in Melbourne.

January 2: Twenty one-year-old Nitin Garg with permanent residency in Australia was stabbed to death by unidentified assailants in Melbourne while on his way to work.

December 29: A partially-burnt body of a 25-year-old Indian national, RanjodhSingh, was found in Australia's New South Walesprovince.
