Pak reacts to PM's remarks, asks for info on terror threat

Islamabad:

After Prime Minister Manmohan Singh spoke about possible Taliban attacks during Indian elections while addressing a poll rally in Kerala on Saturday, the Pakistan government summoned the acting Indian High Commissioner to Pakistan over Singh's statement.

Pakistan's Interior Advisor Rehman Malik has asked India to share relevant information.

"India must share information," said Rehman Malik, Interior Minister, Pakistan.

PTI adds: "Taking a very serious view of this accusation, the Acting High Commissioner of India was called in on Saturday by Director General (South Asia) to convey that the government of India share with the government of Pakistan any specific information available with it which had prompted such an allegation by them," said a statement issued late on Saturday night by the Foreign Office spokesman.

The statement noted that Prime Minister Singh had during a public interaction "expressed the apprehension about a possible terrorist attack in India during the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections from the Pakistan territory".

"It has been Pakistan's consistent position that countering terrorism requires pragmatic cooperation," the statement said.

Prime Minister Singh had on Saturday said the Taliban were a "serious threat" and terrorists were trying to interfere with the election process.

He also said the dialogue process with Pakistan would not resume till Islamabad showed sincerity in prosecuting the perpetrators of the Mumbai attacks.
