Mexico City: A Mexican federal lawmaker was wounded on Thursday when shots were fired at his car near Mexico City, authorities said.

Ramon Montalvo Hernandez, of the leftist Democratic Revolution Party (PRD), was hit by five bullets that came from a nearby car packed with unidentified people in Valle de Chalco, prosecutors said.

An aide who was driving the lawmaker's car was unscathed. Nobody has been arrested so far.

Montalvo Hernandez was conscious during his transfer by helicopter to a hospital in the capital, where he was treated for wounds, said Miguel Angel Contreras Nieto, the top prosecutor of the State of Mexico.

He was hit in the abdomen, both hands, an arm and a foot, the prosecutor said.

The lawmaker, who was mayor of Valle de Chalco from 2006 to 2009, underwent surgery and was out of danger, a hospital official told AFP.

Mexico City's suburbs have witnessed a surged in violence this year, prompting the federal government to deploy more police to the region.
