India expresses 'serious concern' over attacks; seeks report
New Delhi:

With yet another of its national- a journalist - being attacked in Australia, India on Monday expressed "serious concern" over the ongoing attacks and hoped the government there would take more stringent steps to ensure such assaults were stopped.

"We are seriously concerned over the continuity of these attacks on our nationals. I have asked our High Commission for a report into the incident and they will file it by Tuesday. They have also taken up the issue with the Australian government," Minister for Overseas Indian Affairs Vayalar Ravi told PTI.

A young Indian woman journalist working undercover to expose alleged migration and education scams in Australia was threatened and punched by a man here, once again bringing the issue of attacks on Indians to the limelight.

Ravi said that during the recent visit of Chris Evans, the Australian Minister for Immigration and Citizenship, India had impressed on the need to have strong laws to deal with such attacks. "We conveyed our concerns and concerns of our people over such attacks," the minister said.

"I believe the government there will do whatever is necessary to stop such attacks," Ravi said.
