Hair-raising chase to catch carjackers

Hunter Valley, Sydney: Police in Australia arrested two people following a dramatic car chase north of Sydney on Thursday.

It's believed a man and a woman allegedly armed with a handgun carjacked a vehicle in the New South Wales state town of Beresfield, near Newcastle, local media reported.

Police chased the speeding car through the country towns of Maitland, Cessnock and Woolombi.

Police planted road spikes and as the speeding driver swerved to avoid them, an unmarked police car rammed the suspects' car - forcing both cars into a ditch by the road.

Police officers with drawn weapons surrounded the car and removed the man and woman.

They were both arrested and taken away to Cessnock police station for questioning, local media reported.

No one was injured in the operation.
