A 62-year-old German woman fell to her death during a climb in the French Alps on Sunday, the mountain rescue service said.
The accident happened at an altitude of 1,800 metres (5,900 feet) on the Massif des Ecrins, in southeastern France, when the woman was hiking down the slope, lost her footing and fell 50 metres.
"She was coming down by foot along a very slippery path which is navigated with the help of cables along the route," the rescue service said.
When she fell, the victim was attached by rope to another climber who has been recovered safe and well, it added.
An enquiry has been opened into the exact circumstance of the accident.
