Brazil Students Inhale Chemical Product

Sao Paulo:

Officials in a small city in southeastern Brazil say that 11 students and one teacher fell ill after inhaling a chemical sprayed on an orange grove near a public school.

Socorro city spokesman Rafael Pompeu says all 12 were treated at a hospital and released hours after Thursday's incident.

Frederico Ferreira is head of the Sao Paulo State Agricultural Department's office in the region and he says the wind apparently carried particles of the chemical into the school. But he says officials aren't sure if that caused the illness, or if it resulted from food poisoning or something else.

Dow AgroSciences spokesman Gary Hamlin said in an emailed statement company personnel were providing technical assistance in case its Lorsban insecticide was involved.
