At least 13 people have been killed in an attack at a Shiite mosque in the Kuwaiti capital during the main weekly prayers, reports news agency AFP. The attack was carried out by a suicide bomber, news agency AFP quoted a security official as saying.
Witnesses gave a similar account, saying a suicide bomber entered the Al-Imam al-Sadeq mosque in Kuwait City during the weekly noon prayers.
Militant group Islamic State claimed responsibility for the suicide attack, according a statement posted on social media.
The statement identified the bomber as Abu Suleiman al-Muwahed and said the target was a "temple of the rejectionists" - a term used by the Islamist militant group to refer to Shiite Muslims.
The Islamic State group has claimed similar bombings targeting Shiite mosques in Saudi Arabia and Yemen in recent weeks.
