Argentina's Cabinet chief is declaring an end to police strikes and scattered looting, but some violence continued Wednesday in streets abandoned by officers demanding higher pay.
Federal officers are deployed in northern Salta province, where businesses closed with police refusing to go on patrol. Talks continued with police in southern Tierra del Fuego province and the western city of Mendoza. Three other provinces saw violent clashes early Wednesday morning even after police returned to work.
Police say their pay had fallen far below unionized public workers.
But Cabinet Chief Jorge Capitanich blames police for the looting that caused at least 10 deaths, hundreds of injuries and an estimated $90 million in business losses.
