Measures announced about student loans aimed at India realising its demographic dividend: PM on Interim Budget

New Delhi: Finance Minister P Chidambaram on Monday presented the interim budget for the fiscal year 2014-15 to cover expenditure until the government's term ends in May. The biggest highlight of Mr Chidambaram's speech was the announcement on fiscal deficit. The finance minister said the government will curtail its 2013-14 fiscal deficit to 4.6 per cent of GDP, lower than the red line at 4.8 per cent he drew in the last budget. India's fiscal deficit will come down to 3 per cent of GDP by 2016-17, Mr Chidambaram added.
  • I congratulate the Finance Minister for presenting a well-balanced vote on account portraying a realistic picture of the economic situation in the country... The measures announced about student loans and skill development are aimed at India realising its demographic dividend and help our young.
    Prime Minister Manmohan Singh
  • We are wasting time discussing a budget that has not much to say apart from worries and challenges of manufacturing and fiscal containment.
    Kiran Mazumdar Shaw, Biocon chief
  • This budget is practically a no budget. This is farewell budget of a minister who has lost on all counts. Chidambaram gave the speech of his farewell. He was making us count his failures.
    Prakash Javadekar, BJP Spokesperson
  • There is no guarantee that it will be adapted. Finance minister is himself recognizing it. I don't think that Government will proceed on it. I welcome one rank one pension. It has been an early demand since the time of Indira Gandhi ji. I think that for army people a separate finance commission should be made to sit. Many more things could have been done but interim's principle is only this.
    Jaswant Singh, senior BJP leader
  • I have studied every point of the budget and I have concluded that there is nothing new in this budget. They have just announced their achievements. It won't be much beneficial to the public.
    Mayawati, BSP chief
