"What troubled me was how money lenders were looting the poor on the pretext of helping them", says Chandra Shekhar Ghosh, the guest this week on Walk The Talk. A man who quit his job to start an NGO, Bandhan, Mr Ghosh says his aim was to build a micro-finance institution dedicated to help the rural poor get on their feet. Initially, ignoring his wife's anguish at his quitting a salaried job he began lending people money from his savings. Today his entity is worth Rs.11,000 crores and amazingly has NPAs (non-performing assets) of only 0.07% which is unmatched. He says, "Simply wearing suits-ties and making proposals on Excel sheets doesn't define a person's credibility". It is mutual trust that is the foundation of this micro-finance institution, which is about to begin regular banking, starting from the northeastern states. A man with one of the humblest origins, Mr. Ghosh says he'll never forget his roots as he narrates his rags to riches story.
