Naheed came to a skill development centre 11-years ago after her husband was killed in a grenade explosion in Srinagar in 2003. The violent death of her husband meant that the family had no income. She began as one of the many weavers here and soon worked her way up to an instructor. Naheed and many others have Nighat Shafi to thank for uplifting them and changing their lives. Nighat Shafi plunged into social work when Kashmir was in midst of the worst violence, she founded Help - a home for victims of violence and their children. It started as an orphanage, a boarding school for children, also providing health care to the women. Today, it has evolved into a chain of schools providing free education to 300 orphans. Nighat Shafi also started craft centres and skill development courses for women.
