The appointment of veteran Congress leader Kamal Nath as the party general secretary in-charge of Punjab has erupted into a political storm. Arvind Kejriwal's Aam Aadmi Party and the ruling Shiromani Akali Dal in Punjab have charged the Congress with showing insensitivity to the victims of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots in which Mr Nath was named by eyewitnesses, though no formal case was ever made against him. The Congress jumped to Kamal Nath's defence with parliamentarian Jairam Ramesh - considered close to Rahul Gandhi - calling the attack nullah or gutter-level politics by the AAP.
