Cartoonist arrested: Time to scrap the law on sedition?

There is massive outrage over the arrest of cartoonist Aseem Trivedi who has been charged with sedition for his work. Today, a court in Mumbai sent him to judicial custody till September 24. Aseem has refused to apply for bail till the charges are dropped. The Congress has said that while it respects free speech, national symbols need to be respected. The question is: since when is it a crime to draw cartoons?
