The ongoing hearing at the Supreme Court on privacy being a fundamental right has reopened a long buried but an important cornerstone of Indian Constitution - should there be reasonable restrictions on privacy of an individual? Though the Constitution doesn't delineate whether privacy should be a fundamental right yet Supreme Court's judgement on the issue in 1954 and 1962 has made it very clear that the right to privacy cannot be absolute. In today's world when the state is perceived as actively trampling into someone's fundamental rights in the name of security and fighting terrorism, is it time for the court to define what constitutes privacy and draw the line?
